Astoria Road Stream Restoration

Astoria Road, a Montgomery County Road in the serene area of Germantown, Ohio was closed due to a roadway slide. At the heart of the slide, was toe erosion caused by the Unnammed Tributary to Twin Creek. A nearly 4 square mile drainage was displaying hydromodification and channel migration to the roadway embankment. The project team decided to remediate the primary cause of the road slide in lieu of the typical hard/deep retaining walls, the stream was relocated back towards the historic channel and the roadway was able to be rehabilitated with a reinforced earth slope. The stream relocation featured natural channel features including the use of natural materials repurposed including downed trees and rootwads from the stream erosion and creek rock recovered in the channel and floodplain. The resulting stream will provide long-term stability for the roadway embankment while improving the stream and riparian zone habitat.
